Classified as an international waterway, it originates in the town of Donaueschingen in the Black Forest of Germany at the confluence of the rivers Brigach and Breg.
The Danube then flows southeast for 2,872 km (1,785 mi), passing through four Central and Eastern European capitals.

Belgrade (Serbian: Beograd) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name in English translates to "The White city". The city proper has a population of about 1.2 million, while its metropolitan area has over 1.6 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Southeast Europe.

Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with a unification on 17 November 1873 of west-bank Buda with east-bank Pest.
